Emile Cohl and animation schools
In 2006, the Forum des Images and Pierre Courtet-Cohl, the grandson of Émile Cohl, created the Cinéco(h)le program, giving students at French animation schools the chance to create animated sequences from graphic elements of Emile Cohl's lost films. La Poudrière students and trainees who took part in this project demonstrated ample inventiveness, humour and a certain mischeviousness with the project proposal and something of the originality and the rebellious streak of Emile Cohl can be found in the four films made under the direction of film-director Serge Elissalde.
These four films are part of the « CinéCo(h)le program, the films of Emile Cohl as seen by animated film production schools » presented to the Cinémathèque Française in April as part of the superb Emile Cohl retrospective. This program is also to be shown at Annecy on Thursday June 12th and at the Lux, Valence on June 24th, 2008.
Encouraged by this joyous experience, our appetites whetted, ready to pursue our exploration of ‘trick films, we decided to give the students and trainees a free hand to produce their variations and interpretations of these fragments of lost film. In order to do this, we called in that great ‘manipulator of shapes': Paul Cox. Rendez-vous on June 24th, 2008…
